There are at least 42 children in Dougherty County that have been diagnosed with diabetes. The Albany YMCA and the Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital are hoping to halt that number by hosting Camp Fit and FWD to help fight against the disease. Some of the attendees have it while others are learning how to avoid it with a proper diet and outdoor activity.
"We just try to get them to learn how to eat correctly, be aware of foods that aren't so healthy.," said Hannah Orlowski, Clinical Research Director at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital "When you only have certain foods your whole life, you don't know there are healthier options."
The camp for kids ages 8 to 13 runs through Friday.
