Dougherty County Commissioners Monday removed the interim tag from Police Chief Jackie Battle's title, officially naming her the first female police chief in Dougherty County history.
Battle started as a dispatcher at the Dougherty County Police Department 32 years ago and rose through the ranks.
She served as Interim Chief since November when Chief Don Cheek retired.
Commissioners said they did not need to waste thousands of dollars bringing in other candidates and were happy to be able to promote from within the police department.
"That's always good for morale", said Commissioner Jack Stone. "It's been tough on the county police department. They haven't got a raise lately. This is at least a way that we show them that we appreciate them."
Battle is on vacation but said she is thankful to be given the opportunity and that she hopes to move the department forward and present quality police service to the community.
Commissioners also voted to retain the contract of Judge Loring Gray as Senior Judge in Superior Court.
