ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some hungry Alligators were fed by visitors at the Parks at Chehaw zoo Sunday, and the more food they eat could mean an expansion for the zoo.

Visitors can purchase a $5 cup of alligator food and are given free refills anytime they want to feed the reptiles until October.

Zoo keepers said all the proceeds go back to the zoo to help build new exhibits and maintain the park.

"It's pretty popular as you can tell. People really like it. It gets them involved a little bit more with the animals instead of just looking at them," said Emily Hosterman, Relief Keeper One.

Hosterman said the zoo has 22 alligators. She said the biggest one, Charlie, weighs around 1,000 lbs. and is one of the visitors' favorites.

Feeding started in April and goes until October every weekend afternoon at 2 O'clock.
