VSU offers computer training camp

Information from Valdosta State-

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the projected growth of employment in computer science between 2010 and 2020 is faster than average at a rate of 28%.

The demand for computer science professionals is high and expected to grow as companies continue to invest in newer technology and mobile networks.

In an effort to groom area students for this expected growth, Valdosta State University will hold its fourth annual Computing Adventures @ VSU computer science camp for local middle school students July 15-19.

The weeklong camp is designed to introduce students to computer science and allow them to explore advancements in technology. Throughout the week, middle school students will have the opportunity to build and program robots and create Android apps.

Dr. Krishnendu Roy, professor of math and computer science and coordinator of the camp, hopes that the camp will pique the interests of participating students, encourage them to further their knowledge of computer science and information technology and pursue careers in the field.

"Computer science is one of the fastest growing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields, but many students are not pursuing careers in the field because they are  getting limited opportunities in school," said Roy. "Students are some of the heaviest users of computers, smartphones, and game consoles, but they are not learning the science behind it. Giving them an opportunity to become producers and not just consumers of technology is important."

Students will learn fundamental concepts of computer science that they can apply as advancements in technology are made.

Campers will create their own robots from Lego pieces and sensors and program them to do innovative and exciting tasks. Campers will also create Android apps, which they will install and test on actual Android phones.
