Flint River, Chehaw to take on Paddle Georgia

Flint River will be full of hundreds of folks from all over Georgia this weekend as they start their travels of more than 100 miles out on the sparkly waters, from Warwick to Bainbridge.

Saturday is when the adventure begins, as more than 350 folks kick-off the 9th annual Georgia Paddle event, where water enthusiasts will use canoes and kayaks to explore and admire the waterway for a week.

Starting tonight, they'll spend their first four nights under the stars in Albany at Chehaw Park, where organizers have been working to make the grounds the best outdoor experience for the paddlers.

"We're trying to roll out the red carpet and make them feel real welcome here," said Doug Porter, Chehaw Executive Director. "This is a big thing for Albany and we're really excited to be able to host it here at the park."

They've set up facilities, like temporary showers, and will be providing meals and a tour through their zoo.

Then each day the campers will be shuttled back and forth to the launch points on the river.

"But that's what they're all about, you know," said Porter. "Sleeping in tents, temporary showers, but they will have some good hot food and hopefully some good Albany hospitality."

They'll register at the park Friday then while out on the river, they'll explore, get educational information about its nature, and stop at historical sites and popular attractions like the Flint Riverquarium along the way.

"It's good exposure for Albany, I mean, we're excited for Chehaw because they'll be able to see what a beautiful park this is," said Porter.

Proceeds will benefit the Georgia River Network and the Flint Riverkeeper to protect Georgia's Rivers.

So it's not only an exciting vacation, but also a way to make sure our rivers are still as beautiful as they are now, to paddle for years to come.

They'll camp at Chehaw until Tuesday June 18th, when they leave to set up their next camp at Mitchell County High School in Camilla.

The best time to see all the paddlers on Flint River here in Albany will be Saturday afternoon at Riverfront Park.
