Viewpoint: NYSP funding

Posted: Updated:

We often talk about keeping our students busy, off the streets, and out of trouble during the summer months and although it has been a tough road to get there, it was a big relief to hear that the National Youth Sports Program is going on again this summer, kicking off this week.

For almost 40 years, the NYSP has been keeping our community's students active during the summer, incorporating sports, as well as drug abuse education... reading and math tutoring... and physical activities for 9 to 15 year olds.

The organizers were unsuccessful in obtaining funding from both City and County Commissioners this year, and last year, for the first time in its 38-year history, parents were charged for their children to attend.

The denial of funding has not prevented the program from doing what it aims to do…. keep kids off the streets during summer break.

Parents are not charged this year but the program is cutting back from 5 weeks to four and is limiting enrollment to less than 350.

Thanks to those individuals, organizations, and businesses that have invested in our young people and have come through to ensure that they have a positive adventure again this year.
