ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is eliminating its handwriting analysis unit that helped solve crimes for 20-years.

The unit was suspended last June to allow GBI analysts to get accreditation. But the G-B-I recently decided to shut it down for good.

Now, local law enforcement agencies across the state may have to contract out handwriting analysis for forgery crimes. Some investigators said technology is minimizing the need for that analysis.

"Handwritten analysis may be trending off, but technology investigations are trending up. And we're having, even officers that have been doing this for years are having to learn how to do electronic investigations," said Cpt. Tom Jackson, Dougherty County Police Department. "They're having to learn how to use Craig's list or Facebook, and how to pull that out of computers."

Jackson said as the need for handwriting experts dwindles, Many of those analysts will likely shift into new computer based investigation units.
