NYSP gets $2K donation from Albany area Elks Lodge

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A cash-strapped summer camp that helps keep kids out of trouble gets a generous donation Wednesday.

The Albany Elks Lodge presented the National Youth Sports Program with a $2,000 check. The program provides physical and educational activities to 9 to 15-year olds.

It used to get government funding but now relies on private donations. The Elks Lodge applied for special a grant after hearing about the program's struggles on the news.

The money will be used for new T-shirts for more than 400 registered campers.

"We're just so happy, so pleased to receive this donation," said Robert Skinner, NYSP Director. "We only ask that anyone who has the heart and the means, please we're still in need of funding. We still have some field trips we'd love to take. And we appreciate everyone coming out and being so supportive."

The U.S.D.A. provides food for two hot meals for campers every day.  The Albany area program is one of only 17 left in the country.
