ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

About 20 employers ready to hire military veterans and their spouses set up at Albany Technical College Wednesday. The job fair was part of the national ‘Hiring our Heroes' effort to help veterans find work after they leave the military.

Tina Alexander knows how difficult it can be to find a job as a military spouse, and how quickly things can change when duty calls.

"I have a statement that I say, 'Army life, Army wife'. Which means where they call him, I go also," said Tina White-Alexander.

The ‘Hiring Our Heroes' program doesn't just assist military veterans but their spouses as well. Alexander says she obtained her Master's degree so she'll have more career possibilities whenever she gets to the next town.

"When he gets off the plane or parks the car, he already has a job. And for me it's about becoming as diverse as possible," said Tina White-Alexander.

Organizer Ernie Lombardi says veterans and their spouses have an advantage with the ‘Hiring our Heroes' program. Many employers offered mentoring sessions and transition employment workshops.

"The average military veteran is above and beyond. He or she understands team work, they understand mission accomplishment, they're goal oriented," said Ernie Lombardi, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Alexander relocated from North Carolina to Albany eight days ago. She's set on a career in healthcare. She says Albany has a lot to offer and is looking forward.

"It's a challenge but it's worth the challenge, It's only a matter of time," said Tina White-Alexander.

She says the ‘Hiring our Heroes' job fair should be held here in Albany more often for military veterans and their families.

Since 2011, ‘Hiring Our Heroes' has helped more than 108,000 veterans and military spouses find employment.

The job fair was hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.
