VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Lowndes County Animal Shelter is so overcrowded workers are packing twice the normal amount of dogs into one cage. In the past 11 days, more than 260 animals have been dropped off at the shelter. 167 of them have been put to sleep. With these alarming numbers, officials are begging south Georgians to get their animals spayed and neutered.

"48 animals came in on this past Friday alone. This is not an animal problem in Lowndes County and I want to be very clear on that, this is a people problem. This is a direct result of people refusing to spay and neuter their pets," said Lowndes County Spokeswoman, Paige Dukes.

Animal rescue groups like BARC Humane Society are trying to put as many animals as they can into foster homes. Volunteer Kim Naputi picked up a little pregnant pup today from the shelter before she was euthanized.

"It's horrible, its absolutely heart breaking. She would have gotten put down because there are so many animals here that they can only keep a certain amount," said Naputi.

Many of these animals have owners, but ended up at the shelter after getting loose. Officials ask that you microchip your pets so they can be returned if they're lost. It's just $25. Taylor Thomas was able to find her dog Sadie today because of her chip.

"I'm very thankful because her collar slipped off of her, and so she wouldn't have even had it on so they wouldn't have known who's dog it was," said Thomas.

If you would like to help get some of these animals out of the shelter, the adoption fee for cats is $85 and for dogs its $105. All of the animals at the shelter are micro-chipped, spayed and neutered, and have received a rabies vaccination.

The Lowndes County Animal Shelter is open Monday through Saturday.

BARC Humane Society is also looking for volunteers to foster animals as they wait to be adopted, you can call 229-251-7480 or CLICK HERE to find them on Facebook.
