ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

After returning home from years of fighting and serving for our country several of our nation's heroes may find their next job here in Albany.

The University of Phoenix and U.S. Chamber of Commerce are hosting a "Hiring Our Heroes" job fair at Albany Tech as part of a nationwide initiative to help veterans find employment after returning from service.

"When our military men and women get through with their service, they have a skills set," said Chris Hardy, Albany Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. "They have a trade that they learned through the military, the military provides excellent training and there's just not jobs available."

The job fair was first launched in March of 2011 and more than 108,000 veterans and military spouses have found employment at the events throughout the country.

"It's a great program. It's a great idea," said Hardy. "I hope that they continue to do it year in and year out and we're proud to be a part of it."

They're providing workshops for resumes and interview preparation, followed by a career fair with some of America's biggest employers to several small businesses in the area.

All to make sure our heroes and the ones who stand by their side find the employment they deserve.

"Our employers understand the benefit of hiring veterans," said Hardy.

"Hiring our Heroes" is a free event from 10 to 1 Wednesday, June 12th at Albany Tech on 1704 South Slappey Blvd. Space for the workshops are limited for walk-ins that did not register online.

This hiring event is being held in partnership with the Albany Chamber of Commerce, Office of the Mayor in Albany, GA, Georgia Department of Labor, the Department of Labor Veterans' Employment and Training Service (DOL VETS), the Georgia Committee of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, The American Legion, WALB News 10 and other local partners.
