Miller County Sheriff found dead

COLQUITT, GA (WALB) -

G.B.I. agents are not releasing how the Miller County Sheriff died, but his death is under investigation tonight. Sheriff H. E. "Buddy" Glass was found dead at his home this morning. Folks in the community are in disbelief over the loss.

Agents were called to the home of Sheriff Buddy Glass about 8:30 this morning. He was a fixture in the community and was with the Miller County Sheriff's Office for more than 31 years. Family and friends say his death is a shock to everyone.

Agents in Miller County spent this morning searching for clues to find out how the Sheriff, Buddy Glass died.

Agents say his wife came home from working the overnight shift at Miller County Hospital around 7 o'clock this morning to find her husband lying dead submerged in a pond behind their house.

Family members rushed to the home as soon as they heard the news.

"I was just in total shock. You know I was worried about my mom, and me and my little girl we flew down here. And I just been trying to take care of my mom," said Robert Lane.

Robert Lane, who was Buddy's stepson, says he and Buddy had a great relationship and he was well known in the community. He doesn't have any answers on what happened today.

"Don't know. They don't know maybe he had a heart attack. Nobody knows," said Robert Lane.

Sheriff Glass took office in 1997 and was elected to a fifth term last year. His staff wore a black band around their badges to honor the man they call a leader.

"Everybody's sad. We don't know what's going to happen. He was a leader. It's just a sad day for the sheriff's office here," said Deputy Hollis Smith.

Buddy would have celebrated his 69th birthday this coming Thursday. The sheriff's office was planning a surprise party for him.

Now his office sits empty. The Miller County Sheriff's Office says nothing is going to change now that Buddy isn't around.

"Were going to keep doing our job, just like he's want us to do. Be appreciative of the leadership he's given us throughout the years," said Deputy Hollis Smith.

This morning the office also placed a black bow on the doors of the sheriff's office to remember a man they say they'll never forget.

The family says funeral arrangements have not been made yet. Right now the Chief Deputy will serve as Sheriff.  A special election will be held in the near future.

The Miller County Sheriff's Office says they greatly appreciate Baker, Decatur, Early and Seminole counties for helping them out by taking all calls for the rest of the day.

G.B.I. is investigating the case. Agents are not releasing the cause of death until the autopsy is complete.
