Georgia State Police say three people are dead after an early morning wreck involving an ambulance and a semi truck in Irwin County.

It happened around 5:00 a.m. on State Hwy 32. Officials say an ambulance from Coffee Co. was traveling east on the highway with its lights and siren activated.

Meanwhile, a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer were traveling west on the highway. When the car pulled over to yield to the approaching ambulance, the tractor-trailer jack-knifed across the center of the road and into the path of the ambulance. The ambulance then hit the left side of the tractor trailer.

"There was a lot of debris everywhere. Unfortunately the vehicles were destroyed. A lot of EMTs and deputies on scene doing there job," said Trooper 1st Class Marcus Taylor, Georgia State Patrol.

Two EMTs and one patient in the ambulance were killed.

They have been identified as driver Teresa Ann Davis, 44, from Axson, GA, front passenger EMT Randall Whiddon, 56, from Ashburn, GA, and patient Charles Arvin Smith, 65, from Fitzgerald, GA.

There is no word on the condition of the driver of the semi truck.

State Police say charges are pending in the investigation.
