Over the limit: new laws out on the water

It's been a busy memorial day weekend for law enforcement officials.

Department of Natural Resources Rangers say they are strictly enforcing the state's tougher new boating under the influence law that drops the legal limit to .08.

They have already arrested four people on Lake Blackshear, and some boaters were recorded at that new lower limit.

Meanwhile, hundreds of folks took advantage of the beautiful Memorial Day weather on the water. DNR Ranger, Randy James says it's been a very busy weekend.

"I see a greater than average amount of boats out here on the water this weekend. A lot of folks are enjoying it," says James. "The main reason we are out here is for everyone's safety, to make sure folks are obeying the rules, while having fun."

It is during boat stops where officials noticed the signs of an intoxicated operator.

On Saturday, four people were busted for boating under the influence, and officials say that's a lot for one day. The new BUI limit could be to blame, that now matches the limit for driving.

On top of the new DUI law, there is also a new life jacket requirement. Children under age 13 must wear a personal flotation device when aboard a moving vessel.
