Relatives of Miller Co. murder-suicide victim speak out

MILLER CO., GA (WALB) -

The family of a Miller County woman is mourning tonight after GBI investigators say the 58 year old was murdered by her husband, before he took his own life.

Now the family of Barbara Bass is speaking out tonight after a domestic dispute turned deadly.

Yellow crime scene tape surrounds the house on Highway 45 in Miller County, Friday evening, where GBI agents say 70-year-old Rodger Bass shot and killed his wife of 24 years, Barbara, and then turned the gun on himself.

"It appears that there might have been some domestic dispute that resulted in two deaths. Exactly what happened in the altercation, we're not sure on. We'll have to let the crime lab and the autopsies help tell us exactly what happened," said GBI Agent Steven Turner.

Relatives at the scene say the couple was going through a divorce and was separated for a couple of weeks.

Now those relatives are left to mourn the life of who they call a compassionate person.

"She was the rock of our family. She was the one who made sure we all got together on holidays. She was just the rock of our family," said niece Stephanie Odom.

"We know they were going through a separation. As far as violence, we don't have any history on that," said Turner.

The family says they did not suspect an abusive relationship from the couple either, calling Barbara a very caring wife.

"She took care of Rodger. She didn't work. She stayed home, took care of him and all of his business and household stuff. She was just the person we all turned to in our family," said Odom.

Now the only thing this family has left to cherish is the memories of their loved one.

"She's going to be just greatly missed," said Odom.

The investigation as to what led up to the shooting is still under investigation.

The two bodies will be sent off the GBI Crime lab for an autopsy.
