Two pedestrians struck, one dead after HS graduation

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

One woman has died and her nephew is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle following a high school graduation on Tucson's northwest side Thursday night.

According to Capt. Adam Goldberg with Northwest Fire District, the collision happened around 9:30 p.m., just after the Mountain View High School graduation.

Goldberg says the 83 year-old woman was being pushed in a wheelchair and her 59 year-old nephew was walking beside her when they were hit.  They were visiting from Texas to see her grand-daughter graduation from Mountain View.  The woman's daughter, who was pushing her wheelchair, was not hurt.

"It was very congested when this group of people was crossing the roadway," Goldberg said.

There is no crosswalk in the area, Goldberg confirmed. It was uncertain whether there was assistance with pedestrian crossing at the time of the incident.

Any information about the driver had yet to be released, as the Pima County Sheriff's Department continued to investigate.

The status on the nephew is he is in critical but stable condition in the hospital ICU.
