Quick list: Memorial Day tips for busy travelers

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Millions of Americans are expected to hit the road for Memorial Day weekend, but car trouble or other emergencies can spoil anyone's travel plans.

Here are some tips from travelers and automotive experts on how to get the most out of your next trip:

Michael Carter, who is on a long road trip before embarking on a cruise, says he remembers to maintain even the little things.

"I put on new wiper blades and small things like that," says Carter. "It seems like we always broke down when I was a kid, so I want to avoid those problems with my family because its not much fun being stranded on the road."

Rusty Harper, an Automotive Technician at Jeff Fender Automotive says they are open on Memorial day, and expect to be busy.

"The number one thing they fail to check is the spare tire, oil level, and air filters," says Harper. "We always recommend an oil change and a 27 point inspection."

Here are some more recommended quick tips for traveling:

  • Choose your route carefully
  • Use interstates when possible
  • Check the weather conditions
  • Keep emergency supplies available
  • Check the condition of spare tires
  • Never drive under the influence

The "Tow To Go" program offered by AAA is available Memorial Day weekend beginning Friday. Anyone, even non-members, can call them for a free ride if necessary. The program is offered as a last resort service for drivers. You can get more information HERE.
