ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A water leak at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany has been contained, according to officials, who say the base will be fully operational Friday. The leak caused non-essential employees at the base to be sent home Thursday due to a sudden drop in water pressure.

Here is a news statement from MCLB-

MCLB Albany recently experienced a catastrophic failure in regard to its water distribution system. A water main ruptured at approximately 3 a.m. this morning, draining the entire base's water distribution and storage system.

MCLB Albany's Installation and Environment Division wasn't able to locate the leak until 9:30 a.m. due to its location in a secluded area away from the installation's main infrastructure. Normally an automatic system restores water and pressure; however, it was unable to do so due to the size of the rupture and rate at which water was being lost.

I&E crewmen were able to secure the affected part of the system and restored pressure within two hours of sealing off the affected portion of the system.

Labor and lost production costs have not yet been fully calculated however, the cost of the rupture is believed to be significant.  With the loss  of a full work day of thousands of employees who had to leave the base, including civilian workers of the base command, Marine Corps Logistics Command and Marine Depot Maintenance Command.

Without water for chillers, restrooms, firefighting capability, boiler support, etc., a majority of personnel aboard the base were placed on administrative leave.

While nearly $10 million was invested several years ago to update a portion of the distribution system, the installation command has planned a three-phase project to replace the rest of the system.

The command is still investigating the cause of this specific leak and will provide up-to-date information to the public as well as its workforce as to the causes and preventative measures that will take place in the future.
