VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A Valdosta State University student is recovering in the hospital after he was shot at a party early this morning.

Valdosta Police say a party got out of hand last night at Grove Apartments.

Shortly after police responded to the complex for a noise complaint, they heard gunshots in an upstairs unit.

22-year-old Aric Simmons was taken to South Georgia Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his lower torso.

So far police have made no arrests.

"We're not sure exactly what happened in this case. But if you're going to a party, especially if you're going to be drinking, I would suggest that you not take a gun, and not have guns involved with drinking," said Lt. Aaron Kirk, Valdosta Police Department.

Police are waiting to interview Simmons after he comes out of surgery.

If you have any information on the shooting, Valdosta Police ask you to call them at 229-293-3145.
