Cyclists get ready for SB&T Bike Race

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Downtown Albany will be full of cyclists from all over the Southeast flying through the streets this weekend.

The SB&T Bike Race will be held there to kick off the Southeast Regional Series moving through 5 different states over the next few months.

A smaller Criterium race will be Saturday for folks to check out but a big road race Sunday is a 33-mile-loop for bikers to pedal as fast as they can for a grand prize at the end of the whole series.

Michele Moulton started biking in 2007, joined her first race in 2008 and has been zooming through South Georgia roads ever since.

"For me personally, once I get into the race, the nerves go away and you're really just focused on the task at hand. It's like okay, I've got to race my bike and I've got to be smart," said Michele Moulton, PCP Race Team Director and SB&T Bike Race Participant.

This year she's helping organize and participate in the race, along with 350 cyclists.

After this weekend's event, they'll move on once a month to compete in Alabama, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina, with the last race held in September.

"We do it because, I mean, we enjoy riding bicycles. We're amateurs, so it's not like we're making a living doing this," said Moulton. "We do it for the fun and the fitness. You make a lot of good friends doing this, who enjoy a lot of the same things you do. So, it's a lot of fun to do it together."

But once the series is over, the top three winners will get a one year contract to guarantee them a spot on a domestic pro team next year and a cash prize.

Any rider can pedal on in the other state races but if they're looking to win overall, they're required to participate in each.

"There's a lot of tactics and all of that going on, so you get caught up in that," said Moulton. "It's a lot of fun. It's really exciting and you see it on TV, but it's a lot more exciting when you're there actually watching."

Moulton says she competed in the last few SB&T races and they've had bad luck with rain, so this year, all they're hoping for is a little sunshine.

Any bikers interested in racing any of the events in the southeast, online registration closes tomorrow at 11:59pm and there will be a fee for late registration.
