As kids get out of school, they'll spend more time at the pool. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission 137 children younger than 15 drowned in a pool or spa from Memorial Day through Labor Day last year. Another 168 children that age required emergency response for near-fatal incidents. The Southwest Public health district wants to remind families to be extremely cautious near water this summer.

"We know that a lot of drowning's happen. Most drowning's are related to home swimming pool accidents, so that's where we want to place the emphasis . On today too, is making sure that pools at home are safe. Putting fencing around pools to keep children away when their not being observed and watched and then making sure children know how to swim," said Brenda Greene, Southwest District Health Director.

Brenda Greene says it's important to keep your eyes on your child at all times, even if they're playing by a puddle or in a kiddie pool.
