Oklahoma family reaches out through social media

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Some folks in South Georgia frantically tried to get in touch with loved ones who live near the destruction in Oklahoma.

Leesburg's Wendy Mathis has a brother who lives in Oklahoma City and works in Bethany, just 10 miles north of Moore.

She watched the devastation unfold on TV Monday afternoon and began texting her brother. She found out through social media her family was okay.

"You kind of go in panic mode for awhile. And in the meantime, my niece who also lives in Oklahoma City had posted on facebook that they were all ok and they were safe. And then shortly after I got a text from him, letting us know he was ok too, which was a relief."

Mathis says social media can be great tools in emergency situations.

An Albany native who recently relocated to a city nearby Moore, Oklahoma explains the devastating ordeal and how her company stepped up to lend a hand to those impacted by the tornado.

Liz Barfield says the building where she works was just a fourth of a mile outside of the edge of the massive tornado, and a mile away from the eye of the storm.

We spoke with Barfield, who explained how she and her co-workers at Andy Alligator's fun park were able to offer assistance.

Barfield and the rest of her co-workers also opened the building to allow donations to be dropped off for those in need, through today.
