MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS BASE Albany, Ga. – Base officials announced today that federal budget cuts are forcing Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany officials to cancel the base's annual Independence Day celebration.

The base event usually draws 10-12,000 members from the local and surrounding communities. It has always been free and open to the public.

Col. Donald Davis, commanding officer, MCLB Albany, said he and the MCLB staff tried to have the show go on; however, the cost of the event and the stipulations of sequestration made it nearly impossible to host.

"We are unable to conduct our annual fireworks celebration this year due to sequestration," Davis said. "This decision didn't come lightly as our MCLB team understands how important this event is to our service members and the local community, but canceling it will allow us to use all available resources to ensure we can mitigate the fiscal challenges we are currently facing. We look forward to adding the celebration back onto our calendar as soon as is fiscally responsible," he added.

Marines here have been holding the celebration separately from the City of Albany's fireworks event for 18 years, allowing the general public to fellowship with Marines, Sailors and civil servants at the base. The event provided not only fireworks, but also food, static displays, musical performances and other military demonstrations.
