LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

A student-led effort to help cancer survivors ended up being a big success at a Lee County School.

Friday, students at Twin Oaks elementary school donated the proceeds from their effort to the Cancer Coalition of Southwest Georgia. Maria Cerrone was in class one day drawing a picture to raise awareness about cancer when she got an idea to raise money to give to the Cancer Coalition of Southwest Georgia.

"Because I was just drawing and I was thinking it was not going to be big, and then it did," Said Maria Cerrone. Her classmate Kendal James happened to see what Maria was up to.

From there the girls got together to help bring the words sketched on the paper about fighting cancer to fruition.  Their little project turned into a big success. The girls ended up raising $695. The money raised hits home for Kendall since one of her family members is fighting cancer.

"We wanted to make our family member don't have cancer anymore but we know he or she is going to have it, so that make me feel really good about myself and I'm glad that the money is going to go to the donation," Said Kendal James.

Maria and Kendal's hard work has paid off and is appreciated by the staff at the Cancer Coalition who help people fight cancer on a daily basis.

"It's just a wonderful thing to see, young, young kids who understand that there is a need in the community and take a stand. South Georgia is known for our high cancer rates and it is just so cool to see you know some girls that these girls have had cancer run in their families and their not going to sit back, their going to do what they can to help  fight it," Said Emily Jorgenson Communications Coordinator Cancer Coalition of South Georgia

Maria and Kendal's class raised the most money.  As a reward, their class won Krispy Kreme doughnuts and even had an ice cream party. The coalition will use the money to combat cancer in Southwest Georgia.
