ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Summer vacation starts Friday when school lets out for 16,000 Dougherty County School System students. Albany Firefighters want parents to make sure their kids have a safe summer, with no fires.

Firefighters say kids left home alone can be a fire risk, and are asking parents to take steps this weekend to protect them, and go over fire safety rules. Their biggest worry as summer vacations begin is kids cooking on the stove.

Albany Fire Department Assistant Chief Sebon Burns said, "Parents going to be going to work Monday and the kids are going to be home by themselves. That means they are going to have to cook for themselves. That's why cooking safety is so important. Unintended food on the stove is the number one cause of fire."

Firefighters and American Red Cross officials urge parents this weekend to sit down with your kids and talk about fire safety.

American Red Cross Flint River Chapter Executive Director Lara Gill said, "Make a plan with your kids beforehand. Talk about it. What would happen if the house caught on fire? Have a neighbor on standby they could run to. Dial 911, that sort of thing."

Firefighters also want parents to make sure the home is ready. Burns said "One of the biggest things they can do is have a working smoke detector. A working smoke detector, it will indicate to you that there is a fire."

Another prevention step, parents should take unnecessary dangers out of the house. Gill said, "You have the younger crowd that may be playing with matches or lighters, even though we've told them a hundred times not to."

Firefighters and the American Red Cross urge parents to sit down with their kids for a few minutes this weekend. That little time could prevent a fire and even save a life. If your children will spend the night with friends this summer, firefighters urge you to make sure there are working smoke detectors in that home, and identify an escape route if there are security bars on windows or doors.

The American Red Cross has more tips about fire safety on their website.
