Lowndes Middle student starts fire at school

LOWNDES CO., GA (WALB) -

A Lowndes Middle School student is charged with second degree arson after deputies say he started a fire in the school.

The school was evacuated around 2:00 p.m. yesterday after a student lit a garbage can on fire inside a boys bathroom.

No one was injured, and the fire caused only minimal smoke damage.

An 11-year-old boy said he was dared by a friend to start the fire. Deputies say more arrests are possible.

"Not only the danger of the fire itself, but then you're dealing with smoke, and you're dealing with a lot of kids trying to get out of a school to get away from the situation. It had a lot of potential to be dangerous," said Lt. Stryde Jones, Lowndes County Sheriff's Office.

The student was handed over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The Lowndes County School Board would not comment on the student's status with the school.
