NYSP seeks funding for summer program

Robert Skinner, NYSP Director Robert Skinner, NYSP Director
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A summer program for children may have to reduce its enrollment this year.

The National Youth Sports Program requested $15,000 from both the county and city but may not get any.

The N.Y.S.P. used to be federally funded. Last year, it didn't receive any local government money and had to charge participants for the first time.

"To talk with the County Commission again...because I want them to be aware of exactly what's at stake here," said Robert Skinner, NYSP Director. "Because if we leave 500 kids on the street in the month of June and July, there's gonna be some serious consequences."

The program provides two hot meals each day as well as educational and physical activities to keep kids off the streets.

Albany's program is only one of 28 remaining across the nation.
