GEMA awards Thomas Co. Fire $500K grant

One south Georgia fire department will use grant money to replace outdated equipment.

Thomas County Fire Rescue just got a $500,000 grant from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

Chief Chris Jones says the money will be used to replace old self-contained breathing units.

"This protects our firefighters respiratory system. One of the key pieces of equipment that is needed in various situations. Whether it is a smoke filled environment, could be a contaminated environment where there is low oxygen in the area, but it is a vital piece of equipment."

Thomas County must match 10 percent of the grant amount.
