    The rate increased because of seasonal factors, such as the summer job loss among non-contract school workers and temporary layoffs, primarily in manufacturing. There were 60,500 jobs in Albany in June, down by 300, or 0.5 percent, from 60,800 in May. Most of the loss came in state government and the service-related industries.More >>

    ALGIERS, Algeria (WALB) - An Air Algerie flight with 110 passengers and 6 crew member has vanished from radar.The flight, which was headed to Algiers from Burkina Faso, disappeared about 50 minutes after takeoff.The plane's flight path passes over Mali where military unrest continues in country's north. TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Tifton police say a recent increase in violent crime could be part of a seasonal trend.

F.B.I. data shows the summer months experience a roughly 10% increase in all criminal activity, and an even greater increase in more serious crime.

Police said shootings and other violent crimes tend to increase as temperatures rise and tempers flair, making people less willing to work through their differences without a gun.

"Well, it comes in spurts, much like any other crimes. Typically what we see around here as the temperature rises, you have more violence," said Lt. Lee Dunston, Tifton Police Department.

Dunston said he's also seen an increase in burglaries in some areas of the city.

He said police can't be everywhere at once, and they need the public's help to fight crime. Anyone witnessing any criminal activity is urged to call the Tifton Police Department.
