TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

Tifton police say a recent increase in violent crime could be part of a seasonal trend.

F.B.I. data shows the summer months experience a roughly 10% increase in all criminal activity, and an even greater increase in more serious crime.

Police said shootings and other violent crimes tend to increase as temperatures rise and tempers flair, making people less willing to work through their differences without a gun.

"Well, it comes in spurts, much like any other crimes. Typically what we see around here as the temperature rises, you have more violence," said Lt. Lee Dunston, Tifton Police Department.

Dunston said he's also seen an increase in burglaries in some areas of the city.

He said police can't be everywhere at once, and they need the public's help to fight crime. Anyone witnessing any criminal activity is urged to call the Tifton Police Department.
