For many of the estimated 50 million Americans who have to deal with allergies, 'man's best friend' can be anything but. All that pet dander can set your allergies on fire! But there are hypoallergenic dog breeds.

A hypoallergenic dog is a breed of dog that is more compatible to people with dog-related allergies.

Pet Pro Luciano Aguilar says, "Dander, or dead skin cells that a dog sheds, can make some people allergic. The amount varies from breed to breed."

And you might be surprised at what breeds are considered hypoallergenic.

"The Schnauzer comes in a few different sizes - miniature, standard and giant," says Aguilar. "They are loyal and friendly dogs that love to please their owners. The Yorkshire terrier is another great hypoallergenic dog and is perfect if you live in a small home or apartment."

But these dogs are going to require regular grooming to keep them looking good.

"Shih Tzu's are typically easy-going dogs that love attention," says Aguilar. "But they can get jealous of small children if they steal the spotlight away from them."

And don't let the fluffy white fur of the Samoyed fool you.

"While it's been used like wool for sweaters, this breed sheds little to no dander, making them my top choice for people who are allergic to dogs," says Aguilar.

Being allergic to dogs is nothing to sneeze at. But if you're allergies have prevented you from having a four-legged friend, you now know some of the breeds that you might be compatible with.
