Middle GA ends Darton's record season in conference finals 5-4

Posted: Updated:

With its best season in school history in the balance, the Darton State baseball team needed two wins over Middle Georgia to not only extend their record season but to also claim the first region baseball championship ever and they were well on their way in game one but fell 5-4

Darton had a 4-2 lead in the 8th inning when the Warriors made their move.  With Chris Long on the mound for the Cavs, Middle Georgia's Blake Shouse delivered an RBI double that rolled all the way back to the wall in left.  Cody Lanford scored and the Warriors cut the Darton lead to one run.

Later in the 8th Trae Wilson powered a single through left scoring Shouse and tying the game at 4.  The inning of horror for the Cavs continued as Cole Thompson belted one to short with a man at 3rd.  Cody Wofford couldn't field it cleanly and watched as the go ahead run crossed the plate.

After an empty 8th and 9th innings, Darton watched as the Warriors celebrated its GCAA Championship on the Cavs home diamond.

It was a bitter sweet ending for the sophomores who won an incredible 80 games in their 2 years at Darton.

" We're out there starting in August every day. Maybe one day a week off and even the one day a week you're off your spending it with these guys.  Everybody is a brother. Its been a great two years," said sophomore Davis Knapp.

Sophomore Casey James added "We're all close friends. We call each other every summer. Its something else, I mean we were very special to each other. We're going to be in touch. We're going to be friends throughout the rest of our lives. That's how close we were."

"That's a credit to this group. They never quit. 42-14 and 80 wins. I don't need to say anything about the sophomores. They are the reason why this program is where its at today," said head coach Scot Hemmings.

Darton set a new school record in wins this season with 42.
