ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County law enforcers passed a 'Flame of Hope' Friday for a statewide Special Olympics awareness movement.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is one of the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics, Georgia. The run kicked off at the Dougherty County Courthouse at 8:30AM and ended five miles later at the Publix Super Market on Dawson Road.

The financial goal for the event across the state is three-quarters of a million dollars to help send special Olympians and their families to state games.

"Everything is electric that whole weekend," said Kristin Caso of the Albany Parks and Rec. Dept.  "The athletes competing, the award ceremonies, the families and here in Albany, the one thing that blew everyone away was the amount of citizens that just came in to watch the competitions."

Georgias' State Summer Olympic Games open up a week from today at Emory University.
