Organization connects farmers with students

A non-profit organization is helping connect Dougherty County students with farmers so they can make healthier eating choices.

The Southwest Georgia project held a Farm to School Community meeting at Turner Elementary School, Wednesday.

The initiative teaches students where their food comes from and tries to shift how families think about food.

"We want our children to be active but they need the right fuel, right? Like our cars need fuel to go, we need the right fuels. We want to make sure they're eating local, that they're eating fresh and that they're eating vegetables and fruit and getting the right types of caloric intake in their bodies," said Southwest Georgia Project, Inc. Director Daaiyah Salaam.

There will be another meeting at Turner elementary for any new farmers would like to join the initiative Thursday at 11 am.
