LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Lee county leaders are looking for ways to cut spending.

One proposal would consolidate the county's EMS and the fire department.

County Commissioners began meeting with department heads Wednesday afternoon to discuss the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Chairman Rick Muggridge says the county plans to hire a consultant to study whether cross-training paramedics and firefighters would be feasible and cost effective.

Muggridge believes there would be benefits to combining the departments.

"It's under my impression that the citizens of Lee County will be better served. We would serve a bigger area. Even within the areas that we currently serve, we would improve service," said Muggridge.

The idea also came up a few years ago and a lot of EMS workers who said they had no desire to be firefighters pushed back against it.

A decision on that consultant should be made in the next two weeks.
