PELHAM, GA (WALB) -

Students at Pelham Elementary School received a visit from a special guest today.

First Lady Sandra Deal was on hand to read to the Pre-K and kindergarten students as part of her "Read Across Georgia" initiative.

Deal is encouraging students to read one of her top priorities.

She says the key to students making smart career choices begins with the fundamentals of reading.

"We believe their foundation for reading will give them the foundation for a future. If they learn to read at a young age, then they will be able to choose what they want in life instead of what is available," said Sandra Deal, the Governor's wife.

Mrs. Deal's goal is to read to at least one school in each of the state's 180 school systems.
