ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany psychologist says parents need to make sure their children who play sports don't let competition override sportsmanship.

Utah youth soccer referee Ricardo Portillo died Saturday after a 17 year-old player punched him in the face after being called for a foul.

Dr. Cheryl Kaiser says there are several factors that could lead a teenager to act out violently including steroid use and an anger management problem. "When we have our kids involved in a sporting event it's to learn how to be a good winner, also to learn how to be a gracious loser and learn how to play on a team because everyone on the team is important," she said.

That Utah teenager remains in juvenile detention. He was originally charged with aggravated assault, but authorities expect to upgrade the charges.
