Rewards card use lands Albany card thief behind bars

DOUGHERTY CO., GA (WALB) -

An Albany man is behind bars after police say he swiped his rewards card to get extra credits while using a stolen debit card during a shopping spree.

29 year old Reginald Essic, Junior is charged with 8 counts of financial card transaction fraud. Dougherty County Police say this store surveillance video shows Essic using Mona Lisa Darby's Region's Bank Debit Card after he stole it from her car. Investigators say he shopped at several stores, ate at Krystal and Krispy Kreme, and got his car washed.

But all that eating apparently gave him a stomach ache. When Essic bought medicine at the South Slappey Rite Aid, he slipped up.

Dougherty County Police Sergeant Chad Kirkpatrick said "When he was at Rite Aid that morning, using the stolen debit card, he actually used his own rewards card as well to save a couple of dollars off the purchase. So that's one way we were able to track him down, and find him here in Albany."

Essic was arrested Tuesday.
