ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

It could soon be a little more expensive to rent a car in Albany.

Tuesday, city commissioners tentatively approved a 3% rental car excise tax. If it gets the final okay at their next meeting, the tax could begin as early as June first.

City leaders say many larger cities collect this kind of tax which could generate nearly $180,000 a year.

"In large metropolitan areas, this is how they build stadiums. This tax is very common in large cities, and generally is designated for some sort of civic center arena, football arena type of thing," said Nathan Davis, City Attorney.

The city attorney said the revenue would have to be spent on certain capital projects, with similar regulations as the hotel/motel tax.
