Viewpoint: V. A. improvements long overdue

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - It was recently announced that the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs will be implementing an initiative to expedite benefit compensations claims decisions for veterans who have waited one year or longer for things like medical, educational reimbursement, and help with alcohol or substance abuse, and even burial benefits.

There are currently over 850,000 veterans awaiting decisions on compensation claims, of which 600,000 have waiting in excess of 125 days, and over 245,000 have waited more than one year.

Congressman Sanford Bishop, Ranking Member on the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee of Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies has welcomed the news!

Bishop says it's downright shameful that over one-half of veterans awaiting claims have waited four months or more for their earned benefits.  He's hopeful that the VA can turn the situation around and eliminate the backlogged claims.

We agree. This initiative is a much-welcomed change for our veterans and their families.
