Dougherty County Commissioners approve audit

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Dougherty County Commissioners want to make sure companies that own cell phone towers in the county are paying their fair share of taxes.

Monday, the commission approved spending up to $140,000 on an audit.

Tax Management Associates will determine how much property tax each company owes.

"What the audit company will do is go in and review and look for any items that were not reported, and make sure we have the correct number of cell towers as well as the carriers that own the cell towers, and do a basic audit of the books themselves," said Larry Thomas, Dougherty County Chief Appraiser.

State law requires an evaluation of company property every three-to-five years.

Thomas said TMA must asses fair market value of the property towers sit on to ensure companies are paying their fair share.
