Commissioners study need for county police, fire

Dougherty County Commissioners have approved $15,000 for a study to determine what should be done with the county police department. The study for a County Fire Department will cost $24,000.

The eight month study passed by a four-to-two vote and will determine if the county should consolidate the Dougherty County Police Department with the Albany Police department.

They also approved a study to research whether the county should establish its own fire department.

"So I think these studies help everyone understand the financial feasibility of providing these services and it kind of helps put the issues to bed because we can say now that the numbers show that it's a cost that special services has paid for," said County Commissioner Clinton Johnson.

Commissioners say research will look at the best ways in providing police safety. They also say the Dougherty County police department has been doing a good job in protecting residents.
