Third to last school closure public hearing tonight

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Dougherty Co. School system is holding another parent meetings to discuss the various issues and answer questions about the schools that are about to be closed.

Today's hearing is at 6:30 at Jackson Heights Elementary School. Everyone is welcome to attend and give input and hear what school, system officials have to say.

There are only two more meeting scheduled, and they will be held at the following schools:

May 7    Turner Elementary

May 9    Radium Springs Elementary

Sylvester Road Elementary and Dougherty Middle School will be closing and Magnolia Elementary's will be re-purposed for the upcoming school year. Last week's meetings gave parents the opportunity to tour the school buildings and meet with teachers and staff.

This plan is expected to save $2 million a year and $11 million in SPLOST money for renovations needed at the schools on the closure list.

School board members debated the issue for several months and voted on the cost saving plan last month.

Public hearings have already been held on these dates and locations-

Apr 22    Alice Coachman

Apr 23    Live Oak

Apr 25    Merry Acres Middle

Apr 29    Albany Middle

Apr 30    Radium Springs Middle

May 2    Southside Middle
