Sheriff sends warning about fake checks in Terrell County

TERRELL CO., GA (WALB) -

The Terrell County Sheriff's Office is warning people not to cash phony checks that seem like free money.

One man recently got a FedEx package at his home containing a check from a California construction company.

It came with instructions for him to cash the check and send some of the money to three different people.

He knew it was a scam, so he turned the check over to the Sheriff's Office.

"Most people look at this check and say I got $3,800 or $4.000. It's just not the thing to do, try to cash it cause it's not good," said Sheriff John Bowens.

Sheriff Bowens says cashing a fake check can cost you money. He also warns you not to give out personal information to people you're not familiar with.

Give the Sheriff office a call if you get a fake check.
