Doerun to hold May Day Festival

Katey McCoy has returned to the Doerun's May Day festival every year for 25 years.

"That's how old I am. You know, showing my age, but it's very important," said McCoy.

The event's been around for 32 years and her parents joined the Doerun Booster Association to keep the tradition alive when she was a kid.

Now she's the vendor director and plans to do the same for her own.

"I just love to see everybody at night at the street dance, you know, out having a good time and dancing together," she said.

The festivities kick off with a Battle of the Bands competition and a barbeque and Brunswick stew cook-off.

Then from Green Street to Main Street Saturday morning the May Day parade begins before everyone heads to the park for vendors, booths and live music later in the night.

McCoy says thousands of folks of all ages always show up.

"Everybody just loves getting to see each other that they don't event get to see during the work week," she said. "So, they get to meet together and you know,  congregate together and just enjoy each other's company."

They hope even more come out this year from all over the southeast but it will always be something special made for the Doerun community.

"Because it has been going for so long and because you know, we all work together like a big family to pull it together because it's so important for us to have it," said McCoy.

The tradition offers lots of food, lots of fun and live entertainment and just a great time for all families.

This year's new location will be at the park located at the corner of Peach Tree Street and Union Drive.
