ALBANY, GA (WALB) -
A 6-year-old girl is in critical condition after her father crashed his SUV into the back of a semi-in east Albany, Thursday. State troopers say he was driving drunk.
Samiyah Allen is currently in Intensive Care Unit at the Medical Center of Georgia in Macon, in critical condition. GSP said she had head injuries.
Troopers say Payton Allen, Junior of Albany was driving this Yukon SUV around 9:00pm on Clark Avenue when he slammed into a stopped semi at the intersection with Cordele Road.
"At first he stated that someone ran him off the road and made him change lanes. Which the tractor trailer driver said no vehicle was nowhere near, that passed him during the time of the accident," said GSP's Shawn Urquart.
Samiyah was in the front seat, not in a child restraint seat, but did have a seat beat on. It took Albany Firefighters 30 minutes to free here.
Troopers say Allen faces serious charges and firefighters say their new Jaws-of-life helped a lot.
"He's charged with DUI, DUI child endangerment, failure to maintain lane and child restraint violation because his 6-year-old was in the front seat without a child restraint," said Trooper Daniel Joiner.
"Situations like this when you have someone trapped inside of a car, time is of the essence. With good teamwork we got the vehicle opened up and got the victim out," said Albany Fire Department Battalion Chief Daniel Potter.
Allen was arrested at the scene with no serious injuries.
