HOMERVILLE, GA (WALB) -

A Clinch County Sheriff's Deputy shot and killed a man while responding to a call Tuesday night on Tomlinson Road in the northwestern section of the county.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Public Affairs Director Sherry Lang says 59-year old Vernon McCoy Mathis was shot by an unidentified Clinch County's deputy around 9:40 p.m..

Lang would not elaborate on the nature of the call.

Mathis lived on Tomlinson Road which is located about ten miles northwest of Homerville.

Lang says the results of the GBI shooting investigation will be sent to Alapaha Judicial Circuit district attorney Dick Perryman.

WALB News 10 is attempting to contact Clinch County Sheriff Winston Peterson to learn if the deputy who shot Mathis is still on duty during the GBI investigation.
