Girls Inc. to host Bag Lady Luncheon

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Straps, colors, buckles and brand names, the purse is a symbol of femininity and Girls Incorporated of Albany is using that symbol to do what they do best, help build girls age 6 to 18 in South Georgia into successful women in the community.

The organization is asking for donations of gently used designer bags for their first ever Bag Lady Luncheon.

The event is an auction from 11:30am to 1:00pm Thursday, May 99th at the Deck at Creekside of Chehaw Park.

 "We're very gender specific and so we can provide those types of programs to girls to give them other choices in life and help them be able to be better decision makers when it comes to their lives," said Sherrell Alexander, Executive Director of Girls Inc in Albany.

The luncheon will help raise money for their research based programs like their collegiate summer camp for girls and scholarships, so every girl has a chance to experience them.

"She has not yet come out of her shell and when Girls Inc. comes into her life, by the end of our time there at the school, she's more confident. She's smiling, she's met new friends," said Alexander.

They already reach close to 1,500 girls in the region but they're hoping to expand to Mitchell and Terrell County.

 The luncheon will help them do just that after a 3 course meal, music and big auction with the many designer purses they've already collected.

 "They keep coming in with these nice bags and so we've got a lot. So, ladies have a lot to look forward to at the event," said Alexander.

The amount of bags is a sign to them of just how successful they think this year's event will be but their hopes are, of course, that next year will only get bigger.

Designer bag donations and ticket purchases for the event can be made at both Girls Inc locations on 701 Park Place or 1112 Inverness Road and at the Place on the Pointe gift shop on 2416 Westgate Drive in Albany.
