ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany Technical College student, once on the frontlines fighting for our country, is now the face of Georgia's Technical College System.

He was named the top tech college student in the state.

"I'm still in outer space right now. I still haven't come back to Earth yet," said Aamir Greene.

Greene says he still can't believe he was named this year's GOAL Winner, an award that recognizes the top student in the technical college system with an emphasis in leadership.

Greene found out he was the winner at a banquet last week in Atlanta.

"The only thing I can remember is praying to God that I was the 2013 winner and once I was announced that I was the GOAL winner my first response was what a job well done," said Greene.

After serving in the Marine Corps right out of high school, Green became very familiar with telecommunications.

He called airstrikes while serving three tours in Iraq. He took what he learned overseas and applied it to the classroom setting, majoring in telecommunication engineering.

"With that direction and with that discipline, it helped me out a lot not only to stay focused with my not only school work and not only helping other people, but being able to be a GOAL winner," said Greene.

Greene's instructor nominated him for the award and Kaven Williams says Green displays characteristics of not only a bright student but someone who wants to be in charge.

"He portrayed attributes of someone who is a leader that just wants to know more about what he's doing," said Williams.

Now Green has a message out there for those who dream big to never get discouraged.

"If you can dream, put it on paper, plan it, execute it and so your follow up. Stick with it. Stay persistent with it and you should be fine," said Greene.

From here Greene will travel Georgia as a spokesman for technical education. He also won a new car and an iPad.

Greene graduates in December. He's also President of the school's Student Government Association and part of the Achieving the Dream Core Team.
