VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

With information from the Lowndes County Sheriff-

Last Wednesday, a car traveling through Lowndes County was stopped for having its windows too darkly tinted.

A deputy searched the car and found over 100 checks from the United States Treasury, all made out to different people. The amounts totaled over $100,000.

The checks were authentic, and research by the U. S. Secret Service determined that they were gotten through false tax filings, a federal crime.

The three people in the car were all arrested and taken to the Lowndes County jail.

Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine released this narrative-

On Wednesday, April 24 a deputy assigned to Interstate Criminal Enforcement unit stopped a vehicle traveling north on I-75 for a window tint violation.

During the course of the traffic stop the deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located one hundred twenty six {126} individual United States Treasury checks all payable to different persons for varying amounts.

The United States Secret Service was contacted and during a joint investigation between the Secret Service and the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, it was determined that the checks were real and had been either stolen or obtained through fraudulent tax filings.

The group was presumably on their way to cash the checks, although the location is unknown. The total value of the checks equaled one hundred seven thousand six hundred ten dollars {$107,610}.

The three occupants of the vehicle were arrested and transported to the Lowndes County Jail.

  • Craig Koonce, 37, of Bradenton, Florida

  • Keith Brooks, 44, of Bradenton, Florida
