Decatur Co. votes for landfill expansion

Posted: Updated:
DECATUR COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

Leaders in one south Georgia county hope a landfill expansion will help prevent an increase in property taxes.

Decatur County Commissioners voted last week to begin a five and a half acre expansion at the landfill on U.S. 27.

Once construction is underway, the project is expected to take 9 months.

County officials say they'll accept compost from other counties in south Georgia and north Florida.

"We're continuing to look for additional sources of solid waste to come to our landfill because it does have a county revenue producing aspect to it. And we would try to emphasize that as opposed to property taxes," said Decatur County Administrator Col. Gary Breedlove.

Decatur County Officials say the expansion will cost around $600,000 using public works employees and county inmates.

They say it would cost more than $1 million if the project was contracted out.
